WOMEN’S HiSTORY MONTH – ARTIST SPOTLIGHT

This month we celebrate women’s contributions in all fields of history, culture and society. Female artists have inspired millions of viewers and shaped the art world over decades - all in their own unique way. This newsletter will feature a number of strong women, making an impact today. Starting with an artist we were introduced to by our friends at Long-Sharpe Gallery. When they told us about Abu Dhabi-based artist Julia Ibbini, we were intrigued to learn more. THE ART LAWYERS DIARY: SHARJAH BIENNIAL 15

The Sharjah Biennial is an international platform for exhibition and experimentation for artists from the region and beyond. Since 1993, the Sharjah Biennial has commissioned, produced and presented large-scale public installations, performances and films by artists around the world, bringing a broad range of contemporary art, cultural programmes and producers to the communities of Sharjah, the UAE and the region. Sharjah Biennial 15 (SB15) brings together more than 150 artists from over 70 countries and takes place in 16 venues across the emirate of Sharjah. A robust programme of film, music and performance accompanies the exhibition. And we are lucky enough to have art lawyer, Barbara Hoffman, reporting live from Sharjah. Here she shares her experience with us, with a focus on female artists including Mirna Bamieh, Veronica Ryan, Carrie Mar Weems, Wangechi Mutu, Coco Fusco, Hajra Waheed and more.

MEET OUR EXPERT: RHONDA LONG-SHARP

After a successful 20+ year legal career defending men and women on death row in the highest courts of the US, art enthusiast and collector Rhonda Long-Sharp decided to formally pursue her passion for the arts in 2005. Beginning as both an art consultant and modern art broker, Long-Sharp specialized in post-war and contemporary multiples and works on paper. Recognizing the internet’s inherent global accessibility to fine art and cognizant of obstacles that virtual galleries can place in a collector’s path, Long-Sharp invested substantial resources and years of experience as a collector and dealer to provide national and international buyers with security and confidence in the acquisition process.
